Before You Begin

There are a few checks you’ll need to do before you connect your favorite Bluetooth headphones to your Mac. Some of them might seem obvious, but they’ll be frustrating if you don’t do them.

1. Turn off Bluetooth on Your Phone

It’s super frustrating when your headphones say they’re connected, but nothing happens and your Mac is still searching for a device to pair with. If you haven’t already and you’re just assuming the computer will connect, you’re making a mistake! Turn your computer on and make sure it’s awake before you do anything else.

  4. Make sure your headset is charged. It could be disconnecting due to being out of battery. 
  5. Ensure that your headphones are the selected audio output for your Mac. If your Mac is connected to two different Bluetooth audio devices, it might be playing audio out of a different device (like your speakers).

There are a few things you can do in this situation. As usual, they are straightforward and you shouldn’t have too much trouble–you can always turn off your headphones and they will automatically disconnect!

  1. Click on the Bluetooth icon. Select the headphones, and then Disconnect.
  2. Disconnect from the Bluetooth window in System Preferences
  3. Simply turn off the headphones.
  4. Some headphones disconnect when you plug them into the charger.
  5. You can also remove Bluetooth headphones from your list of Bluetooth devices.
