I am a big fan of LED flashlights, and use them all the time. LEDs are very efficient (much better battery life), and typically have lifetime ratings of 50,000 hours or more. Also, if you accidentally drop an LED flashlight, the light will still be shining, which is not the case
I am a big fan of LED flashlights, and use them all the time. LEDs are very efficient (much better battery life), and typically have lifetime ratings of 50,000 hours or more. Also, if you accidentally drop an LED flashlight, the light will still be shining, which is not the case with incandescent bulb flashlights. My only complaint is that they only illuminate a relatively small area at a time (where the flashlight is pointed). It would be nice to have a portable light that illuminates the entire area around you at once. For these reasons, I was anxious to try the TaoTronics LED Table Lamp (TT-DL23). It is cordless, portable, LED powered, and even has a built-in 4400 mAh (milliamp hour) rechargeable battery (USB port charging, with charging cable included). It is lightweight (509 grams, or 1.12 pounds), and even has a carrying handle, which is easily moved to the side, when not needed. Plus, it evenly illuminates the entire area around you (a full 360 degree circle). So, is it a table lamp, or a portable night light, or a baby light, or a portable lantern? I would have to say it works equally well for all four functions. It is a good sized lamp (10.75 inches tall, and 4.3 inches in diameter), yet is lightweight (1.1 pounds, or 509 grams on my scale). The large base makes the lamp stable when sitting on a surface, and it is also easily carried around with the thick strap handle. Control of the lamp is simple. There is a capacitive touch sensitive 2.1 inch aluminum disk on top of the lantern, which controls all functions of the lamp. A quick touch of this disk will turn the lamp on. If you place, and hold your finger on the disk, the lamp will continuously brighten, until you remove your finger, at the brightness you like. If you again place, and hold your finger back on the disk, the lamp will then continuously dim, until you remove your finger, at the brightness you like. From any brightness, a quick touch of the disk will turn the lamp off. The lamp will remember the brightness you last used, and will turn on to that brightness again, at which point the brightness can be changed again, if you like. I really appreciated the 360 degree light coverage of the entire area around you, which you don’t have with a flashlight. Plus, the entire large surface area of the lamp cylinder is evenly lit, which minimizes shadows, which occur when smaller point sources of light are used, such as in flashlights. Since the light comes from many points (large surface area), shadows are much less of a problem. I found that it makes a nice work light in dim or dark areas. It would also be very useful for camping. The lamp is charged from any USB port. A computer, laptop, or a USB power supply can be used. A 30 inch charging cable is included, which has a standard USB plug on one end, and a micro USB plug on the other end. The micro USB end plugs into the lamp, while the standard USB end plugs into any USB port or power supply. A small LED on the base of the lamp, next to the micro USB charging port, turns red when the lamp is charging, and turns blue when charging is complete. It seems to take about 4 hours to fully charge the lamp from a completely discharged battery condition. Another feature of the lamp that I liked is the excellent battery life. It is stated that the lamp will light continuously for 72 hours on the lowest brightness level, which is still produces quite a bit of light. As of this writing, I have been using the lamp continuously at the lowest brightness level for 53 straight hours, and the brightness has not changed. Also, the lamp can be left on a charger, while the lamp is operating, for continuous use for an indefinite amount of time. Because of the long battery life, this would be an excellent light source during power outages, or for camping. The lamp is quite sturdy, and it appears that quality materials were used in its construction. It does not look cheap. The plastic illuminated portion of the lamp is a thick translucent white plastic and is quite strong. I could not push in the plastic with a fairly strong grip. The top and the base are also a sturdy simulated wood colored plastic, and look quite realistic. A microfiber cleaning cloth is also included. I will be using this lamp in a number of applications, where I will have better lighting, than I have had with only a flashlight before. Although I received this TaoTronics LED Table Lamp as a sample in exchange for a fair and honest evaluation, I feel that I have done an honest evaluation of the product. I did not receive any money, or anything else for the evaluation.
