As a professional reviewer, it's not unusual for at least a few gadgets and gizmos to show up at my front door every week. But when this one came, my wife really thought I had bought her a present. She said it was "pretty much the coolest thing ever." Well, I guess we're off to a good start. I may not be quite as enthusiastic about it as she is, but I have to admit that it's pretty cool. More importantly for me, though, it's very well-made. It's made of heavy duty aluminum, and unlike so many similar products you'll find today, it appears to have been precision-made - everything fits together just right, all the pieces are properly machined, there are no rough/sharp edges, stuff like that. It's not lightweight plastic crap. And unlike some other items that I've purchased, the stake that goes in the ground is actually made of metal, too. This is something that you can tell right away is going to last for a while, something you won't ever worry about in bad weather (short of a giant tree limb smashing both it and your house. Actually, this might hold up better than the house). It also works well. The buttons on the remote are self-explanatory (it came with instructions, but I actually never opened them). Change which colors are displayed, change whether the lights blink, change the speed of the animation and/or blinking, or set the timer so that it automatically turns off in 2, 4, 6, or 8 hours. Couldn't be simpler. The only thing I had a little trouble with was that you have to wait a second between pressing the speed buttons multiple times - if you do it too fast, it doesn't register anything but the first press. But that took all of 15 seconds to learn, so not a major complaint. Besides that, the only other problem I had was the inability for the lights to continue to move while not changing pattern. For example, this could be used for parties/events year round (not just at Christmas) when it's displaying only dots, and not a Christmas pattern. But the only way to make it stay on just those round points of light is to slow the speed down until it stops. That means if you want to stick with one pattern, there won't be motion of any kind. I know, it's kind of nit-picky for what is inherently a Christmas decoration. I just like for things to be as versatile & multi-purpose as possible. Final thoughts: it's a little nerdy, but I love the remote. Not the plastic part, but the extendable antenna. Pulling that thing out makes me feel like I'm using an old-school walkie-talkie, or maybe the kind of remote they always use to detonate bombs in movies. Like I said, nerdy. But that doesn't make it any less fun. So while my initial reaction may not match my wife's "pretty much the coolest thing ever", I can't say that I really disagree with her. It's a pretty cool little gadget. It's in no way a necessity for every day life, but if you're looking for something fun & cool for your house this Christmas season, this is a great place to start. And it might just make your wife really happy, which is a guaranteed way to make your Christmas even merrier. As mentioned above, I'm a professional reviewer. I received this product from the manufacturer for review. As a professional, I can not (and do not) allow that in any way to affect my review or rating.
