The air in most homes in the US is often too dry (low humidity), especially during winter months, and in cooler climates. This can cause dry and irritated sinuses, throat, eyes, lips, and skin. This causes the respiratory tract to not function as well, and leads to increased colds, flues and infections. Dry air also results in certain viruses having a longer life span, which is not a good thing. For these reasons, as well as my wife suffering from chronically dry eyes, I have often used a humidifier in the bedroom of our home at night to increase air moisture. We have both noticed improvements, with fewer problems from sore and irritated throats, sinuses, and eyes. This TaoTronics TT-AH002 Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier is an easy and inexpensive way to add more moisture to the air in your home. Cost of operation (for electricity) is very low. The humidifier only uses 24 watts of power on the highest mist setting, and 11 watts on the lowest mist setting. This means that the humidifier can operate on the highest mist setting for over 3 hours for less than a penny’s worth of electricity (or for 7 hours on the lowest mist setting). In the past, I have used a Hot Mist Humidifier, where water is heated to near boiling (212 degrees F) to provide steam to humidify the air. I used our old Hot Mist Humidifier in our home when we had small children in the house, and was always very careful, since the steam would burn, if the hand was placed near the humidifier. If you still have one of these old units, I would highly recommend that you dispose of it immediately for safety reasons, and purchase an Ultrasonic Humidifier. In addition, the cost of operation of this Cool Mist Humidifier is less than one tenth the cost of a Hot Mist Humidifier. This TaoTronics Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier is simple to operate. There is only a single knob, which has a click stop position (OFF) when the knob is fully rotated left (counter-clockwise). This is the OFF position. When the knob is rotated right (clockwise) just past the click, the humidifier turns on at the lowest mist setting. The knob can then be rotated further right (clockwise) until the knob cannot be rotated any further (less than one turn). This is the highest mist setting. The knob can be turned anywhere between the lowest mist and highest mist settings, to adjust the mist output for your room size. A green LED lights to indicate when the humidifier is turned on, which also turns red when the humidifier is out of water, and needs refilling. This humidifier has a water of capacity 3.5 liters (almost one gallon). The tank easily lifts upwards from the base of the unit for easy filling. The unit will operate for 10 hours on the highest mist setting. This highest mist setting will add about 10 ounces (300 ml) of water to the air per hour. This will work well in a good sized room (it works well in our large bedroom at night). The specifications state that it will humidify up to a volume of 150 cubic meters. This means that it should work well to humidify an area of about 600 square feet (assuming 9 foot ceilings). It will not fully humidify your entire house if the air is very dry. However, it will result in an improvement in humidity in your entire house. The mist produced is cool to the senses, and does not condense as water droplets on nearby objects at all, since the mist produced is cool. With my hot mist humidifier that I previously used, the steam produced would condense as moisture on nearby objects, just like warm air condenses as moisture on the outside of a cold drink glass. This humidifier actually has 2 mist nozzles in one piece. Each nozzle can be rotated a full 360 degrees, independent of the other. Thus, mist can be pointed in any 2 directions for misting at the same time. Or, both nozzles can be pointed in the same direction for increased mist in a single direction. I have not seen this dual nozzle feature in any other humidifier. The humidifier has a cleanable filter to clean the water of micro-organisms, minerals, and odors. It is easily cleanable by dipping the removable filter in white vinegar for 10 minutes, and then rinsing it clean under water. The filter is located in the water tank filler cap. I like the cleanable filter which lowers the cost of operation (no replacement filters needed). The unit will shut off automatically when a low water level is reached (the green LED will turn RED), requiring the refilling of the humidifier tank to operate the unit again. Although a quiet fan is used in the humidifier, overall operation of the unit is quiet. The room has to be fairly quiet to hear the humidifier operate. The noise is pleasant and is not objectionable at all. This TaoTronics Ultrasonic Humidifier seems to be solidly constructed, and high quality materials are used throughout. It has a simple design, which is aesthetically pleasing to the eye. The base of the humidifier is smooth and made of a white colored plastic. The upper portion (water tank) is made of a clear blue plastic, and I liked that the water level is easily observed in the tank. Finish is excellent, with no sharp edges anywhere. There is also an illustrated manual which covers complete operation of the humidifier. Although I received this TaoTronics Cool Mist Ultrasonic Humidifier (TT-AH002) in exchange for a fair and honest evaluation, I feel that I have done an honest and unbiased evaluation of the product. I did not receive any money or anything else for this evaluation.
